National premiere: AI-assisted digital dermatoscopy, available for Romanian patients in Bioderm Hospital

Doctor’s experience and artificial intelligence make an unbeatable team in detecting skin cancer

  • With over 30 years of experience in premium dermatology, Bioderm introduces AI-assisted digital dermatoscopy in Romania Bioderm Hospital, in Saftica (Balotesti, jud. Ilfov), newly inaugurated in March;
  • In fact, Bioderm launched digital dermatoscopy two decades ago in Romania, a state-of-the-art technology that has become the standard in early detection of skin cancer;
  • With the aid of artificial intelligence, dermatologists will be able to capitalize on an unprecedented level of experience and casuistry in the field – a major step in the fight against skin cancer, an increasingly pressing condition worldwide.

„The partnership between an experienced doctor and AI provides maximum efficiency! Artificial intelligence takes skin cancer screening to another level, offering even more accuracy and speed. Speed in case analysis, reaction speed, speed that can make a difference in melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. It is a new step forward in the mission we have assumed since 1999, when we introduced digital dermoscopy for the first time in Romania. We were at the forefront of skin cancer prevention, through free actions carried out throughout the country with the Melanoma MayDay mobile dermoscopy unit, and we continued this mission by opening the new dermatology hospital at the beginning of this year, followed now by introducing an innovative digital dermoscopy system for the first time nationally.”, said Dr. Claudia Sprâncenatu,  Bioderm CEO, and Dr. Lucian Russu, dermatology-venereology specialist, founder of Bioderm.

Based on a deep learning algorithm, evaluated and validated by numerous clinical trials, the AIMEE AI assistant (Assistant for Artificial Intelligence Mole Examination and Evaluation) provides an instant risk score for moles and lesions analyzed with the digital dermatoscope, increasing the decision and reaction speed of doctors and patients. In fact,  the „Human with Machine” study, published in Jama Dermatology, showed that medical performance can be greatly improved with the help of artificial intelligence, for the benefit of patients.

The latest innovation in the field, now available in Romania, is a wireless digital dermatoscope with cloud storage, based on artificial intelligence (AIMEE assistant): Skeen. The new device enables a quick view of injuries, accurate photography and safe storage of images and data. Featuring a crystal-clear high-resolution camera and magnetically attached optics that provide 20x or 40x zoom, Skeen delivers high-precision skin images, both polarized and non-polarized, optimized for in-depth visualization of skin and scalp structures.

Developed by FotoFinder Systems, a pioneer in artificial intelligence for dermoscopy, skeen combines advanced imaging capabilities with the unlimited AI power of AIMEE, the artificial intelligence examination and evaluation assistant for moles.

Bioderm is also equipped with a modern state-of-the-art digital dermoscopy unit FotoFinder Full Body ATBM Master, an advanced procedure that scans the entire surface of the skin, creating a detailed dermatoscopic map of moles. This rapid and non-invasive procedure gives doctors a clear and complete picture of the patient’s skin condition and allows early detection of skin cancer, including its most aggressive form – melanoma.

Skin cancer, an increasingly pressing condition

The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing in recent years as a result of repeated exposure to the sun without sunscreen, climate change and the habit of artificial tanning in the solarium. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is the second most common form of skin cancer worldwide, characterized by abnormal and accelerated growth of squamous cells – a type of epithelial cell that makes up the epidermis. When detected early, the disease is treatable.

Among skin cancers, melanoma is the most aggressive form: 75% of people diagnosed with metastatic melanoma die within the first year of diagnosis. Caught at an early stage, melanoma can be curable in a proportion of 95%, an important role in prevention being played by dermatoscopy – a non-invasive and painless investigation. In recent decades, the frequency of melanoma has increased more than 15-fold, affecting more and more young people. Melanoma is the sixth most common type of cancer in both men and women.

In Romania, the gross incidence of melanoma is 3.86 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the mortality, 1.68 per 100,000, according to data from the Ministry of Health, at the level of 2020.

Anyone can develop skin melanoma, but the risk is higher depending on genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors:

  • Light skin, eyes and hair;
  • Genetic factors: presence of numerous moles, personal or family history of skin tumors;
  • Severe and repeated sunburn, especially before the age of 15;
  • The habit of artificial tanning, in the solarium.

Patients from all over the country can benefit from specialized consultations and classical dermoscopy settled based on a referral, and AI-assisted digital dermatoscopy – based on a private insurance or for a fee – at Bioderm Hospital.
