„Challengers”, Zendaya’s tennis film, examines the friendship between a complicated trio
Zendaya knew right away from reading the script for Luca Guadagnino’s romance sports comedy „Challengers” that the character she would play, a former tennis player turned coach, was shameless about her own power and how she used it.
Regarding her character Tashi Duncan, Zendaya stated, „I also think that she isn’t immediately dislikable, and she isn’t perfect, and she isn’t trying to be and we’re not making any excuses for that either.”
Zendaya asked viewers not to pass too much judgment on the characters in the movie when she appeared on stage at the film’s Los Angeles premiere while wearing a neon green halter dress.
Even though they aren’t always likable, Zendaya believes that complicated characters like the ones in the film are essential.
The movie centers on Duncan, a former tennis prodigy who lost his leg injury career and went on to become a coach.
She is a tennis champion who coaches her husband, played by Mike Faist, who is currently on a losing streak. Her plan is to assist him win by setting up an unexpected competition between him and his former best friend, who was also Duncan’s ex-boyfriend.
The film examines the frequently erratic relationship among the three central characters and how it relates to their shared love of professional tennis.
On Friday, the picture from Amazon MGM Studios opens in theaters.
